WELCOME TO COASTING BRITANNIA
The coast of Britain is 11,000 miles long but estimates of the walkable coastline varies between walkers anywhere between 4,500 miles and 7,500 miles. The whole distance is very sketchy with only a small band of people (Coasters) having completed it.
So the only way to find out is to go and see for myself. I intend to keep to all paths or roads closest to the foreshore and record my mileage as I go. This walk could take me up to my retirement and some months into it. I intend to walk sections dependant on the seasons, work and the leading of a normal life. This walk takes in many spectacular national trails and paths. It will give me the chance to view my country by foot and to engage with the people all around these great Isles. Being a very keen walker I have wanted to get my teeth into something really challenging and personally special to me, hopefully leaving something that can be followed later by others searching for a life adventure.
Originally I was going to have to wait until after retiring to start this walk, however the yearning to get started has made me want to start doing parts of the walk whilst still working and having my health. A good friend has agreed to join me for part of the walk, along with some family and members of the Wrong Roaders walking club a Railway based walking club in the Southeast of England. I know this is my own personal journey and I am happy to do it on my own, but I am grateful for all the support I will and have already received from like minded individuals.
I have so much that still needs to be planned and decided on as I proceed. I intend to record it all on this blog, so you can keep an eye on my progress. I have set up a just giving page to raise some charity money for Demelza Children’s Hospice, which helps those who may not live a long life, to live a full life. Demelza provides the best care and support for seriously ill babies, children, young people and their families, across East Sussex, Kent and South East London, so I do hope you will be kind enough to donate to this very worthy cause.
Hopefully this will be the life changing adventure that I have been looking for and I will give it my best shot. I just hope that my legs and health hold out for me to complete it.
Lastly thank you to Mandy my partner for her continued support, which has never wavered.
